ChatGPT's new usage limits may test subscribers' patience

OpenAI Unifies ChatGPT and Codex Limits

OpenAI is consolidating usage limits across ChatGPT and its Codex coding assistant into a single shared allowance for Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers. While the move simplifies subscription management, it could leave power users reaching their limits faster as coding and conversational AI workloads now draw from the same pool.

What's Changing?

OpenAI is preparing to replace separate usage measurements for ChatGPT and Codex with a unified quota system. Under the new model, subscribers will no longer track consumption independently across products. Instead, every interaction, whether it's a coding task in Codex or a conversation in ChatGPT, will count against a shared allowance.

For many users, the change may make account management simpler. However, developers and heavy AI users could find themselves consuming their monthly allocation more quickly than before. Complex coding tasks, large context windows, and compute-intensive requests are expected to draw more heavily on available capacity, creating trade-offs between how subscribers use ChatGPT and Codex.

The update also reflects a broader shift in OpenAI's product strategy. As coding assistants become increasingly integrated into general-purpose AI workflows, the distinction between products is beginning to disappear. A unified quota system suggests OpenAI increasingly views coding, research, writing, and analysis as part of a single AI experience rather than separate services.

Instead of separate measurements, Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers will have a single gauge for both. More complicated tasks will consume more of that allowance.
